Human nature and leadership are closely intertwined, as an understanding of human nature is crucial for effective leadership. Much like the 8 Modalities we teach in our program, human nature refers to the inherent characteristics, feelings, and behaviors that are common to all people. These innate traits can play a significant role in how individuals respond to leadership and can shape the way that leaders interact with their followers.

One of the most important aspects of human nature that relates to leadership is the natural tendency for people to follow strong, competent leaders.  As we teach in our coaching program, people are often drawn to leaders who are confident, charismatic, and decisive. These leaders are able to inspire and motivate their followers, and they are often seen as role models. However, it is important for leaders to be authentic and to lead by example. If a leader’s actions do not align with their words, they are likely to diminish their brand, and lose the trust and respect of their followers.

Another aspect of human nature that relates to leadership is the tendency for people to resist leaders who they perceive as unfair, inauthentic, unengaged, or untrustworthy. People have an innate sense of justice, and they are not likely to follow a leader who they believe is acting in their own self-interest or who is not treating them fairly. Leaders must be aware of this tendency and strive to be transparent and fair in their decision making. They should also be open to feedback and willing to listen to the concerns of their followers as well.

Self-awareness is another important aspect of human nature that relates to leadership. Leaders must be aware of their own strengths and weaknesses and how they may impact their leadership style. They should also be aware of their own biases and how they may impact their decision making. Additionally, leaders should strive to be empathetic and to understand the perspectives and needs of their followers. By understanding the needs of their followers, leaders can create a culture of trust and respect, which will lead to more effective leadership.

In conclusion, human nature and leadership are closely related, and an understanding of human nature is crucial for effective leadership. Leaders must be aware of the natural tendency for people to follow strong leaders, but also to resist leaders who they perceive as unfair or untrustworthy. Additionally, they must be self-aware and strive to be authentic, transparent, and fair in their decision making. By understanding human nature, leaders can influence, connect with and motivate their followers, which will lead to more effective leadership.
