A toxic workplace is characterized by fear, poor communication and high turnover. Employees feel devalued, unappreciated, bullied, maybe even Leaders and managers neither respect nor appreciate the employees. Attempting to shame people, insulting team members, and blaming when things do not go as planned are just a few examples of toxic behaviors.
Stockholm syndrome is a condition in which hostages develop a psychological alliance with their captors during captivity. Emotional bonds may be formed between captors and captives, during intimate time together.
- This term was first used by the media in 1973 when four hostages were taken during a bank robbery in Stockholm, Sweden. The hostages defended their captors after being released and would not agree to testify in court against them.
- Stockholm Syndrome – traumatic event, isolation, indoctrination, promise of a reward.
How to get rid of the toxic workplace environment:
- F – get anonymous feedback from employees
- A – address the group
- U – disseminate the course of operation for going forward to your leaders, managers, supervisors, etc.
- L – have the other leaders give their buy-in and permeate throughout their group
- T – celebrate quick wins, get more feedback, continue to improve the process – don’t get complacent or comfortable. Do not revert back to what was
